At the beginning of the NFL season, Ines Sainz, a female sports journalist was in the NY Jets locker room waiting to do an interview. She tweeted about being embarrassed and later admitted to feeling uncomfortable as players sent catcalls her way. So the Association for Women in Sports Media stepped in, an NFL investigation ensued, and the Jets’ owner, Woody Johnson apologized. So what are the issues raised here? What’s all the big hoopla about?
Is this acceptable behavior towards any journalist, let alone a female?
No, I don’t think it is. The media is there to do its job – to interview and report. Players need to show up and do theirs as well. I know it’s a locker room but this is media time. There is a time and a place for everything. Making any journalist feel uncomfortable through inappropriate language is just not professional nor acceptable.
Is the way Sainz dresses too provocative? Is she “asking” for the catcalls?
I don’t have as clear cut of an opinion here. Being a female in a male dominated industry (technology) for over 10 years, that grey area is still grey to me. On one side, I like looking feminine – fixing my hair, makeup, and wearing something that is flattering. However, it’s very obvious these choices have a clear reaction (both advantageous and disadvantageous) depending on the situation. I also know how to “play it safe” as I’m sure Sainz knows. I have to give her credit to sticking to her stance on what she wears. She’s repeatedly said that this is who is she is, and she’s not going to change. But let’s be realistic, if you’re going to wear something that’s in the grey area, expect to receive grey area responses. Just be sure to own the consequences.
Does Sainz realize that what she went through was bigger than herself?
Heck no. That one’s for sure. What I mean is that, although she admits to feeling embarrassed and uncomfortable due to the players’ comments, she states that she was there to do her job and she just pretended that nothing was happening. It was another female reporter who approached her about the comments and it was the AWSM who filed the complaint. If it wasn’t for them, she would not have reported the incident. It’s behavior like this, a “let’s pretend nothing happened” mentality that allows inappropriate behavior to continue. We, as women, fought for the equal right to report on male sports. We should receive the same locker room respect as well. Period.
