World's 100 Most Powerful Women of 2010
Forbes.com released their choices for the 100 most powerful women in the world for 2010 and the selections are not made up the usual CEO’s, political figures and women’s firsts. This year they have taken a new approach and focused on the “creative and entrepreneurial” power of this year’s influential women and came up with a list that ranges from Michelle Obama to entertainment stars like Lady Gaga.
I like that Forbes has embraced a new angle in regards to who the magazine feels are powerful women in society. It shows that they are aware of the times and that power comes in more forms than elite degrees, impressive financial statuses and company big wigs. By versifying their “best of” and venturing out of the traditional archetypes of years past, I believe Forbes is sending out a very positive message to young women. It is exemplifying that the young girl with an eclectic personality and creative soul can do just as well or be just as important to the world, as the girl who loves campaigning for class president and has her life neatly planned out for greatness.
This topic hits close to home for me because in a family of five women, including my mother, I feel like we all have something great to offer just in a different way. What I excel in my sister might not, but what she’s great in I have a horrible time learning how to do, which by the way is following recipes. I always feel like I can add or miss a step that will make the dish so much better in my eyes and it turns out horrible.
The media has such a major influence on our actions and reactions whether we like to admit it or not. Sometimes it even evokes a more subconscious response. If and when the media begins to embrace and redefine their standards of what a successful woman is, it will inspire new minds and a new generation to keep thinking outside the box and follow their own calling. To make the world go round there’s a variety of different characters that we need to make us happy, keep us safe, help us believe and motivate us to strive for more.
Who are some of the women that you find powerful but don’t necessarily see receive the credit they deserve? The question truly has an infinite amount of possibilities. To find out more about the 100 ladies Forbes.com has chosen to place on a pedestal check out http://www.forbes.com/wealth/power-women and see what you think.

It's nice to see that we are
It's nice to see that we are not so narrow-minded about what makes up a successful or a powerful person. There are definitely various ways to be powerful (although, I guess that depends on your definition of power) and influential to other people. Speaking of influence, the things that influence us are now less political and intellectual, but more geared toward popular culture and entertainment. Just look at how a lot of young people now get all of their information from blog posts instead of books, newspapers, or the news. An influential person will definitely take advantage of such trend.
